Help! The Sun Is Ageing My Skin

As much as natural vitamin D is beneficial for overall health and wellbeing, unfortunately, too much sunshine and sun exposure can lead to premature ageing. The sun’s ultraviolet radiation poses multiple threats to your skin’s health. According to a study published in 2013, UV exposure seems to be responsible for as much as 80% of visible facial ageing signs.

But how exactly is the sun ageing your skin? Let’s take a look at the connection between premature ageing and sunlight exposure, as well as ways in which you can protect your skin.

How does the sun age your skin?

While wrinkles, pigmentation and fine lines are an inevitable part of ageing, there certainly is a bigger culprit to blame, and it’s called photoaging due to sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) light exposure.

UVB rays are responsible for damaging and killing skin cells on the outer layer, leading to a thickening of the epidermis over time. UVA rays, on the other hand, penetrate deeper into our skin layers which reduces the skin’s elasticity over time. Combined, it's a lethal dose of premature ageing.

Here are a few tips to keep your skin from ageing prematurely from the sun.

Preventing premature ageing from the sun

Thankfully, there are things we can do to minimise the sun’s effects on our skin.

One of the simplest measures is to wear a hat and sunscreen when out in the sun. But that’s not the only time you should wear sunscreen protection. Spend most of your day indoors? Unfortunately, you could still fall victim to UVA rays permeating through glass and even clouds for those that claim the sun isn’t harsh enough to damage their skin! Sunlight certainly is the number one cause of skin ageing, but around 10 percent is known to come from HEV and infrared light. These are high-energy, blue lights that are emitted from both the sun and digital devices such as television, mobile phones and computer screens. This type of light is particularly harmful as it stays an active part of our lives most of the day and a lot of the time when the sun has gone down too.

Wearing a UVA, UVB and HEV protective sunscreen above SPF 30 is your best bet, especially if you work in front of the computer all day – it’s the number one preventive measure for antiaging. Use sunblock daily under makeup to prevent premature wrinkling of your skin.

Although many vitamins won’t directly protect your skin from the sun like sunscreen will, vitamins A, C and E are great antioxidants that can help protect your skin from the inside out, repairing any damage that might have already been done. Incorporating vitamin C into your diet may improve skin hydration, stimulate collagen production, protect against wrinkle development and premature aging due to sun exposure.

Collagen is also an important supplement to help slow down the ageing process, considering your natural collagen production starts to decrease as you age. Supplementing with collagen may reduce signs of ageing, wrinkles and dry skin.

In addition to daily sunscreen and vitamins, if you’re already experiencing the signs of photoaging, you can include the right skin care products to help reverse the sun damage.

Here are a few of our recommendations:

Kinvara Hyaluronic Youth Boost - This fragrance free gel combines the proven plumping action of hyaluronic acid and the superfood properties of turmeric to help target signs of aging, especially at the mouth and brow areas.

Kinvara - Skincare Active Rosehip Day Cream - It’s one of our best sellers and we know why! Rosehip and thistle are both high in omega fatty acids, vitamins A and E, and is proven to assist in cell regeneration and reducing the appearance of scars. The rosehip face cream is also enhanced with hyaluronic acid which retains moisture and behaves like a ‘filler’ to increase volume and fullness respectively. All ingredients help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and increase cell regeneration, skins softness, smoothness and volume.

Jason® Age Renewal Vitamin E Moisturizing Cream - Vitamin E is a great antioxidant that stabilises the skin and help brighten dark spots and the Jason® brand is devoted to using only ingredients from the rich source of goodness that is earth’s garden and its natural resources.

Lastly, although it might be tempting to get a tan now in these sun-filled Irish days, it’s much safer to use a tanning bottle as opposed to tanning in the sun rays. Remember to avoid the sun between 10 am and 3 pm when the sun is its strongest.

With these simple tips and the right skincare, you can keep your skin looking good for decades to come!
